Angie Thomas' debut novel 'The Hate U Give (THUG)' is a well-written, exciting tale about the current situation in America, where black lives matter less than whites, apparently.

It follows 16 year old Starr, who lives with her family in a 'poor' neighbourhood where gangs rule the streets, drugs ruin lives on a daily basis and gun-shots in the evening hours are as normal as anything. Out of fear Starr's parents sent her to a school in a different part of the city, one where she is one of the two black pupils in her year. Starr is used to live in two different worlds and knows it's better to keep them separated, but when she witnesses the unjustified shooting of her childhood friend Khalil by a police officer her two worlds are bound to collide.

Angie Thomas' book is just grand. It makes you think and argue with yourself. It shows that the world, the people and their actions cannot be divided into 'black and white'. It shows the injustice dark skinned people have to face everyday, that they are dealed with as suspects, always. It also, quietly and indirectly, leads the reader to understand how such a treatment leads to anger and how this anger, paired with the frustrating fact of seeing no chances for your future and being confronted with threats all around can lead to drastic actions.

THUG is an important, moving eye-opener. It being a book intended for young adult readers, holds some kind of positive message in the end, which, in my eyes, it should. Nevertheless it is giving an almost frustrating, honest and open account on 'black life' in the United States of America and is surely helping the 'Black Lives Matter' movement. Joining in with John Green I'm sure 'The Hate U Give' is destined to become a classic of our time!
