Admittingly, I wasn't all too much interested in this one, when I found it on Netgalley and saw my instant approval. Only after reading the first Goodreads review, all gushing ("supernatural Romeo and Juliet"), was I really interested. That much that I've read it straight away, despite my reading plan. Jeff Giles throws you right into the action, making me check Goodreads several times to make sure I didn't miss a prequel. This was a stand alone, right? After finishing it, I'm still not sure, but it definitely is a fun read netherless. The Romeo and Juliet aspect didn't catch me, but I enjoined the dynamic of the involved lovestory. As for the story, I felt it was sometimes a bit rushed and wondered if it wouldn't have been better as a series of two books to let them all explore their emotions a bit better. And I don't mean just X and Zoe but every character. Many actions were totally questionable and incomprehensible. Giles tries very hard to make you care for all the characters, but sadly only X and Zoe did the trick for me. In the end I did enjoy Ripper, while I couldn't stand Jonah at all. He just drove me nuts, to a point were I wanted to stop reading. Thankfully, he became less prominent towards the end. While everything becomes quite predictable after half of it, the ending did surprise me. I really do enjoy how Jeff Giles ended it here. even if there is coming a next part, the story for me is finished here, and I am satisfied with it. Despite all this critique I totally enjoyed reading this and did so very fast too, as I couldn't put it down.
