When Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead near his manor in the Devon moor, it is widely believed that he fell victim to the old family curse of the hound of the Baskervilles. His physician is sceptical although he found footprints of a hound near the body and calls on Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. The latter travels to the moor where he needs to protect the new heir of Baskerville Hall and witnesses mysterious events until Holmes and Watson solve the case.

I had never read a Sherlock Holmes novel, but for a long time „The Hound of the Baskervilles“ sounded the most intriguing of the novels to me.

I found this an surprisingly suspenseful read with lots of suspects and traces which kept me guessing for quite some time. The author Arthur Conan Doyle knows how to spread red herrings and he uses the setting of the moor for creating a creepy atmosphere excellently. I really liked how the criminal case was merged with supernatural elements. In the end, I was proven right about my solution of the case which I had about halfway in.

I was surprised that the events are told by Dr. Watson but it makes sense. He is like the reader, unraveling the mystery step by step, while Sherlock Holmes jumps to conclusions only his brilliant mind can follow. Another pleasant surprise came in the methods which Holmes used. I dare say, he (and the auther) was ahead of his time, using forensic evidence like scent or different fonts used by newspapers to solve the case.

„The Hound of the Baskerville“ is a detective story that hasn't aged one bit and it made me want to read more of Sherlock Holmes' adventures.
