I was 14 years old when I read my first Paulo Coehlo. "Veronica decides to die" got my 14 year old me, I vowed to read all of this mans books. I kept my promise for many many years. I cannot pinpoint the moment I started feeling less enthusiastic about a new book by Coelho. Somewhere along the way either he or I changed so much that it seems there won't be a crossing of our paths anymore. Especially when "Manuscript found in Accra" came out, I felt cheated. What even was that? So I paused and let some titles pass me. But Mata Hari? Oh how I awaited that book! When I got approved to the advanced readers copy and I saw the size on my Kindle I was dissapointed. "So its only a teaser? Not the whole book?" I was wrong about that. It sure was the whole book... Sadly I was thankful about this as it would mean not loosing much time on it. But I never read a book that felt more rushed. "Apparently foreigners were not welcome, or Parisians thought they were superior to all other peoples of the earth." - the only fun line in this book, but so out of place I couldnt even laugh. This was supposed to be a book about Mata Hari. I feel sad for the opportunity as this could have been a thrilling and captivating story. Instead of going into her escapades, her feelings, her circumstances it feels as if he only ticks of the known facts. "She got raped- check! She lost a child- Check! She went to Paris- Check!" He could have written a grocerie list, it would stir the same amount of feeling in the reader. While the beginning is reall promising, Mata Hari in prison, her last minutes before she gets shot, most of the book is a recap of her life, told by her in letterform to Mr Clunet, in hopes that this brief insight to her adventures will be delivered to her daughter. After she reaches her end, the book goes on with an answer from Mr Clunet, with the same emotionless style is he reciting what has happened to her after she got captured. On the positiv note, as she only had a week to write it, it is probably a convincing last letter about ones life. For someone who expects a moving novel filled with historical accurate facts, this is a waste of money...
