Oh boy, this was THE title I wanted to read since I knew of its existence. Last year netgalley approved me to "More happy than not" and it became my most favourite book of that year. I couldn't wait to get my hands on something new by Silvera. Again, Netgalley and Soho Press were incredible nice to me. 2 month before the official pubdate, I was able to download my most anticipated title in ages on my kindle. Thanks again! You guys made my day, month, year! After I had the file on my kindle I needed a week till I got myself to actually read it. Because if I start and read it, I would have read it. What if it wasn't good? what if it was so good I was angry that I read it so fast and soon... Schrödingers cat. Well I dove into it, and as it is Silveras style, could escape till I was finished. I don't know how he does it. Something speaks to me. My expectations were quite high, which is never good! BUT, Silvera didn't dissapoint... as much. Ah, I'm being unfair here. The story is really good. His writing is really good. What's wrong, you ask? Personal preferences. I was hoping for a Silvera-ish twist at 70% into the book, I was counting on it. The way the story was heading couldn't stay the way it was. I was so hoping to get laughed in the face by the book. I had a discussion some time ago how I dislike how fast fictional characters are forced to overcome their grief. It's a private matter, some people take longer than others. Still I always wonder how you can be expected to move on after 3 months that THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE died. Why is it such a problem for your surrounding to let you grief? So this is a total personal opinion of mine, and I think Silvera works very well with the theme of grieving, but sadly he too starts the move on subject pretty soon. I mean 4 weeks of grieving is pretty much no time at all for me. ( even if it's not his LOVE OF THE LIFE, at least it's his FIRST LOVE that he is suppose to end up with). Griffin is a quirky lead that transports his feelings real enough. The idea to start the book with the ending and jump back in the beginning to see how everything happened, may not have been best idea here. Sadly I didn't connected with Theo, so everything they were going through... didn't made me emotional. A huge point in that is my dislike for the "I'm breaking up with you for your own good, without considering your own choice in this matter and then being miserable the whole time"- scheme. I thought better of you Silvera... My favorite part was the relationship between Griff an his parents. Not even John Green could write a better dynamic. Thanks for that! Also the friendship between Theo, Griff and ... was interesting to see, not rainbows and unicorns but with edges and struggles along the way. Like real life! Bonuspoints for that. A huge part, next to the griefing, is Griff OCD. When it was first mentioned I didn't know it would become such a huge part of the book. That was also something that felt halfheartly, a little bit like "Griefing is not enough... he needs another problem on top of it!" and it plopped up whenever Silvera needed it. If you didn't knew it after More happy than not, it should be clear that Adam Silvera is here to stay, even without the 100%-"Wow Book". I gonna read every book that man is writting and... who are we kidding, his tweets too. History is all you left is a moving contemporary, and even more important, LGTB book that shouldn't miss on your shelf.
