The Broken Hearts Book Club is a lovely and entertaining read with an interesting storyline and a few twists to it.

Lucy is a very quirky, caring and likeable character who struggles with guilt over and consequences from an event in her past. This event made her leave the little Yorkshire village she called home for London and it also makes her run away from relationships every time someone starts getting close to her.

Although it’s not until near the end that the reader finds out what happened to Lucy, it gets hinted at a lot throughout the book and a few of the secret’s layers are revealed as the story unfolds. It definitely kept me wondering and speculating throughout the book.

The story is narrated from Lucy’s point of view and includes a lot of direct speech. While Lucy’s voice suits her character, I felt that some of the other characters’ voices weren’t always quite distinctive enough. Sometimes I found it a tad difficult to distinguish between Lucy’s speech and those of her best friends. At times I also felt the book a bit repetitive as Lucy kept mentioning the same details over and over again.

The book club isn’t quite as prominent in the story as the title would have one expect. Still, it does make regular appearances and I particularly liked the mention of the various books they read. I did, however, keep wondering how quickly all the members read, especially since they all had jobs and book club meetings seemed to take place weekly. Having said that, the timeline wasn’t always very clear, not just in relation to book club meetings.

The book ended on a happy note. I thought it was perhaps a teensy bit rushed towards the end, particularly as the lead-up to it unfolded much more slowly.

Nonetheless, The Broken Hearts Book Club is a lovely and feel-good read, which even had me laughing out loud at times, especially when Lucy randomly started singing!

I would recommend the book to readers of chick lit. Considering the low price, one really cannot go wrong buying it.
