A weird mixture: sad and grim, at times unbelievably hilarious, but always beautifully written.

Sweetgirl is a beautifully told story about grim and ugly things.

At sixteen years and living with a drug-abusing alcoholic rather than a caring mother, Percy James thought she had seen it all. But when she stumbles upon a neglected baby in the house of her mother's dealer friend Shelton, she can't help but take the baby and run... Determined to save the baby's life, Percy gets unexpected help from an old friend, but things become dangerous when they are suddenly hunted by Shelton. I was impressed by Percy's sense of righteousness, how she still believed in good though she was constantly surrounded by evil. She

This book is a peculiar mixture of sadness, desperation, but also hope, and at times it was unexpectedly hilarious. Highly recommended.
