Usually I go to the library to 'hunt' for books for my son (after all it's his library card), but sometimes I get lucky to snatch a book I want to read by myself, as was the case with this title. I first became aware of the book when the German edition was advertised in a local bookstore, and back then I put it on my 'maybe' shelf, which usually means it remains there for eternity. Unless...unless I find a marked down or library copy.

The book: the plot was interesting enough, but I thought the events in the Netherworld should have been better connected, at times they seemed to random. On the other side, we got to visit different nightmares from different people, so I guess the variety was not completely avoidable.

While the book dealt with some serious issues - death of a parent, coping with a new stepmother, facing one's fears, it didn't lay it on too thick and the main focus remained on Charlie' adventures in the Netherworld. I guess children can easily identify with Charlie and/or his friends, as they are no natural born heroes. Therefore, the message this book sends is a very valuable one: in order to overcome your fears, you have to face them.

Guess I will put the sequel on my 'maybe' shelf as well...
