This most memorable and surprising collection of wildlife imagery reveals the beauty and drama of the na­tural world, as well as the incre­dible sto­ries be­hind the photo­graphs. It show­cases all 100 pic­tures awar­ded in the 2023 Wild­life Photo­grapher of the Year com­pe­tition and con­tains a huge variety of sub­jects and styles.

Chosen by an international jury from 50,000 entries, the collection re­pre­sents the work of photo­gra­phers from across 27 count­ries, with images that range from tiny living gems to dra­ma­tic and some­times dis­tur­bing vistas. High­lights in­clude un­for­gettable images of animal be­havior, extra­ordi­nary under­water scenes and re­por­tage of our comp­lex re­lation­ship with the natural world. Among the most imagi­native pic­tures are those taken by photo­graphers, from Israel to India, to China and New Zea­land.

Every image is accompanied by a description of the behavior on dis­play, the bio­logy invol­ved and the ethi­cal and con­ser­vation issues re­le­vant to each of these re­mar­kable scenes.

Rezension:

Wie es schon seit 1991 Tradition ist, liegt auch in diesem Jahr zum Jahres­wech­sel der neue „Wild­life Photo­gra­pher of the Year“-Bild­band vor. Num­mer 33 ist es mittler­weile schon. Wie ge­wohnt fin­den sich darin die Sie­ger­bil­der des jähr­lich statt­fin­den­den Foto­wett­be­werbs, der nicht ohne Grund auch als die Welt­meis­ter­schaft der Natur­foto­grafie be­kannt ist. Dass die ab­ge­druck­ten Bil­der zum Bes­ten ge­hö­ren, was der aktu­elle (so­wohl tech­nische als auch ästhe­tische) Stand der Natur­foto­grafie zu bie­ten hat, kann man da von vorne­herein voraus­set­zen. Lei­der sind (wie mitt­ler­weile schon ge­wohnt) auch in die­sem Jahr wie­der eine An­zahl Fotos dabei, die eher die Natur­zer­stö­rung do­ku­men­tie­ren, als die Schön­heit der Natur zu zei­gen. Doch auch von letz­terem sind wie­der ein­drucks­volle Bil­der zu sehen. Die Band­breite reicht dabei von In­sek­ten bis zu Walen. Ein­drucks­voll ist bei­spiels­weise das Foto eines nächt­lichen indi­schen Wal­des, nur be­leuch­tet vom Licht der dort mas­sen­haft vor­kom­men­den Glüh­würm­chen. Der­ar­tige Bil­der wur­den na­tür­lich erst durch mo­dernste Kamera­sen­soren mög­lich und wären vor 33 Jahen, als Band 1 er­schien, tech­nisch völ­lig un­denk­bar ge­we­sen.

Fazit:

Auch nach 33 Jahren trifft sich im alljährlichen „Wildlife Photographer of the Year“-Bild­band das Who-is-who der Natur­foto­grafie.
