Just because a novel is a big hit in the US doesn't necessarily mean that it will be a success in Germany and, as sad as it may be, being number one on a bestseller list doesn't guarantee a good book. But in the case of Gone girl all scepticism proved unjustified.

To begin with Gone girl is not as advertised a crime novel as such, it's more an interesting view on a young marriage between two mid-30 Yuppies. The first time we meet Nick and Amy Dunne is on their fifth wedding anniversary. Although Amy is up in the morning preparing breakfast and plays the part of the devoted wife beautifully, something seems not quite right between these two.

While Nick is at work still wondering why Amy has been in such a good mood this morning his wife disappears from their home and in the living room are obvious signs of a struggle. These introduction to there life is told by Nick, so we can be sure that he is innocent, right? Not really because the next chapter is a page from Amys diary which shows a different Nick one with a temper and cruel. For a long time the plot is like a emotional roller coaster you don't know who to believe or who is the villain in all of this.

I can't tell more about the book without giving spoilers! But it's really an exciting read and makes you wonder not only about relationships but about a generation of professionals that had there life turned upside down by the financial crisis, or in Nick and Amy's case by the newspaper crisis, and how they cope with this.
