The Return of the King is preceded by The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers It is recommended to read in this order.

In the last book of the Lord of the Ring trilogy, it is of course about a king who returns, the battle to fight orcs, the hope to destroy the Ring.

But is is also about what happens after it. 

It is an incredible good ending, and much better than the movie.
