The Two Towers is preceded by The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, followed by The Return of the King. It is recommended to read in this order.

The edition I read is telling me that Tolkien didn't want to have the Lord of the Rings split into three books, but on the other hand I have read books with 1600 pages and it is after a while heavy to carry around.

So what must be kept in mind, read The Fellowship of the Rings before The Two Towers, if not you will not be able to follow Frodo and Sam on their quest with Gollum to destroy the Ring.

To see Aragorn's growing into the king he must be.

Reading the friendship between Legolas, an elve, and Gimli, a dwarf.

To follow Merry and Pippin in their quest with Treebeard to fight against Saruman.
