I'm glad the book was recently 'revived' by Valancourt and thus brought to my attention, otherwise I would have missed out on this fine work.

I love creature features, especially creepy crawly ones. The Nest is an oldie in this genre, but it hasn't lost its bite during all those years - literally.

Between the covers of this book you will find a disturbing mix of cozy island feeling and very graphic descriptions of roach attacks - wonderful! The writing has an old-fashioned, almost distinguished? flair about it, which should come as no surprise, considering it has been written about 40 years ago. It especially shows in the sweetly blossoming romance between Elizabeth, granddaughter of one of Yarkie island's reputable resident and selectman, and Peter Hubbard, a scientist called for help with the bug plague.

This romance clashes beautifully with the cockroach invasion on Yarkie island. Numerous attacks by the ravenous creatures are described in gory detail to the very last bite, leaving absolutely nothing to the imagination. Of course, these are not your garden-variety cockroaches, but some mutated species exceeding their common type in size, aggressiveness, strength and even brains, commanding them as one giant force.

It was impressive how the author took special care and consideration not only of what - and there's definitely a whole lot of gross whats to be found here - but also of how he was writing, carving each sentence with precise accuracy to make the most of it.

I am glad the book was recently 'revived' by Valancourt and thus brought to my attention, otherwise I would have missed out on this fine work of horror.
