[...] he knew in his body, even if he hadn't yet put it together in his mind, that in America the worst thing you could be was a black man. Worse than dead, you were a dead man walking.

So, I took my sweet time reading this book, because this was such an impactful book. Where I live, we do not really get to know much about american and/or african history, hence this wasn't just an entertaining book with a dark theme to me but education at it's finest. I even got it recommended to someone I don't know just because I was reading it on my way to a friend of mine. A young girl sat in front of me in the bus and asked me, if she could take a photo of the book, as she was very interested in it. Which is something I would do too, if a book someone else was reading were to catch my eye.

I recommend this book to everyone, because it is a book for everyone.

Yaa Gyasi has written a very insightful, wonderful and horribly realistic story about slavery in america and how the white people changed the lifes of people of a whole continent. It is hard to even grasp the monumental power white people had and still have and are ignorant about.
I cannot count the times that I was apalled by the brutality and the hipocrisis. The self proclaimed educated white man from his self proclaimed civilised land with the actions of someone who is neither educated nor civilised. Which is exactly why this book is so important, because we still see this today and to understand today and how we got to be here, we need to know, what happend in the past.
