Wonderful and dark
All in all I really enjoyed "The Morrow Secrets". Susan McNally has her very own style of writing, that definitely stands out from the vast majority of authors out there. She describes everything very precisely and picturesquely, being very detailled on the one and leaving room for interpretation on the other hand. The lovely illustrations are taking your imagination to a complete new level!
Although I was sceptical at the beginning - with reference to only 256 pages - it was surprisingly profound and elaborate. Tallitha is a very stubborn girl that knows just what she wants, that will jump head over into every adventure. Those attributes are bringing her to life.
The Gothic atmosphere is present on every single page, takes you off into far distant worlds.
I have to admit, that I was struggling to understand especially one word; I understand the meaning of the word "shrove" but I couldn't find a German equivalent. This disturbed my reading flow a tiny bit. I suppose that it is derived from "to shrive" which means to hear the confession of (a person) (source:http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/shrive), but I am not quite sure of this. I would recommend this book to those who speak English fluently due to the language register. It's not as simple as the Hunger Games or the first Harry Potter books.
All in all "The Morrow Secrets" really is the first riveting instalment in a new spooky Gothic trilogy. Who enjoys the dark style of Tim Burton or the lovely stories of Matthias Malzieu is going to love Susan McNally!
Alles in allem hat mir "The Morrow Secrets" sehr gut gefallen. Susan McNally hat einen vollkommen eigenen Schreibstil, der aus der breiten Masse herausspringt. Sie schildert alles sehr detailliert und malerisch, ist zugleich sehr genau, lässt dem Leser aber dennoch genug Spielraum für eigene Fantasien. Die wunderbaren Illustrationen beflügeln die Fantasie nur noch mehr!
Obwohl ich am Anfang ein wenig skeptisch war, da das Buch lediglich 256 Seiten hat, ist es überraschend tiefgründig und wohl durchdacht. Tallitha ist ein sehr starrsinniges Mädchen, das genau weiß, was es will und sich gerne kopfüber in das nächstbeste Abenteuer stürzt. Diese Eigenschaften machen die Protagonistin besonders real.
Die Gothik Atmosphäre ist auf jeder Seite präsent, zum greifen nah und entführt den Leser in fremde Welten.
Ich muss zugeben, dass ich jedoch mit ein paar Wörtern meine Probleme hatte. Das Wort "shrove" verstehe ich zwar, doch ein deutsches Wort dafür habe ich bis heute nicht finden können. Mich persönlich hat das ein klein wenig im Lesefluss gestört. Ich vermute, dass es von dem Verb "to shrive - beichten" kommt, sicher bin ich mir jedoch nicht. Aufgrund des Sprachregisters würde ich dieses Buch daher nur denen empfehlen, die der englischen Sprache mächtig sind. Es ist keine leichte Einheitskost wie J.K. Rowling oder die Hunger Games.
Alles in allem ein fantastischer Auftakt einer äußerst vielversprechenden Trilogie. Wer Bücher oder Geschichten im Stil von Tim Burton und Matthias Malzieu mag, der ist mit diesem Buch vollauf bedient. Wer seine Englischkenntnisse ein wenig verbessern möchte, und sich ein Vokabular fernab des Schulenglisches aneignen möchte, der hat hier seine Chance.
