Big Little Lies is a mystery novel. It's a witty, realistic story about children, friends, husbands, exes, cliques and the little lies we tell everyday. It's also about: Parents behaving badly.
Bullying.
Domestic Abuse.
Murder.
The book tells the story of a parents night out at an elementary fundraiser where something goes terribly wrong. It’s a clever, gossipy and amusing story filled with kindergarten drama but also deals with serious situations.
The moms in Big Little Lies are written so well. I loved all the different stereotypes represented in each of them and how the different dynamics played out between them and their families.
I have one complaint, though: the book is way too long. This should have been a 250- or 300-pager; it’s not epic or important or engaging enough to warrant 480 pages.
If I said I loved this one, it would be a little lie. It took me a while to get into it, but I definitely LIKED it, despite the rough beginning. It was an entertaining, witty and realistic story with a mystery that had a satisfying ending that I really enjoyed. It gets 4 Stars instead of 5 for the simple fact that it was too long and when the pacing went off the rails it was pretty noticeable to me.
Looking forward to the HBO series!
