Good Omens. Good Story.

If Douglas Adams had written for Supernatural, it would have resulted in something like Good Omens.

But seriously, what do you expect of a book written by the two writing-geniuses and lunatics Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett? Of course it had to end with Famine opening up a chain of Burger Restaurants, a hellhound having a thing for the German Shephard across the road and witchfinder sergeants counting nipples. Yes, this sounds weird, but so is the book.

So imagine angels and demons, heaven and hell are real and so is the ineffable plan to bring down the apocalyse and finally sort out who is the better gang. Problem is Sister Mary misplaced the Antichrist and he grew up being a pretty normal 11-year-old who isn’t really fond of the idea of ending the world.
Also two representatives from heaven and hell grew kind of attached to the conveniences and pleasures the human race created for themselves, because heaven seriously doesn’t have a clue about good music and eternity in hell would be… well hell, even for a demon.
Also, what would the winning side do without it’s counterpart?

Story: Armageddon isn’t really a new and creative idea to write about and I probably wouldn’t have read it if it wasn’t for Neil Gaimans name on the cover, but it’s more about the characters and the way it’s written really, not the story.
Idea: ★★☆☆☆ Development: ★★★★☆ Solution: ★★★★☆

Writing: Brilliant English. Bristled with irony and insider jokes. British Humor.
Wittiness: ★★★★★ Depth: ★★★★☆

Characters: ★★★☆☆ (You gotta love Crowley though. You simply have to. Five stars for Crowley!)

All-in-all:  If you liked The Hitchhyker’s Guide or you’re a fan of the Disc World-books and you’re looking for a funny book (and you don’t mind having another ship to ship, in case you’re a fangirl) I recommend this book. (Also read the author’s notes. Short, but genius.) Good Omens is 367 pages of pure and entertaining madness.
