"By day the banished sun circles the earth like a grieving mother with a lamp."

This is an extremely dark tale of a world passed through a proverbial dissolvent.

In a scorched and dangerous post-apocalyptic America, an unnamed father and son scavenge for food, look for shelter and try to avoid bandits and people who’ve resorted to cannibalism. The two, pushing along their rusty cart, travel the road simply because they must. The alternative is death.

This is my first Cormac McCarthy, and it took a while to adjust to his writing style. There are no dialogue quotes. Sentences are often verb-less. Contractions have no apostrophes. The language is poetic yet not flowery or excessive.

This is not a book for everyone – but if you’re looking to add to your Pulitzer Prize winners list or want your friends to believe that you are a super genius while they are reading crap, The Road is short and easy to get through.
