Catherine Sloper, naive but heiress to a fortune, attracts the attention of a good-looking but penniless young man: Morris Townsend. But her father is deeply convinced that his motives are merely mercenary. Innocent Catherine is misled by her meddling aunt and mistreated by both her father and her lover. However she grows in strength and wisdom. Washington Square, first published in 1881, is a short novel by Henry James. The author himself never showed any real affection for this novel, but it has become one of his most popular works.
