CONTENT

Rachel commutes with the same train every day to London, but she is not on the way to work. She has lost her job month ago, because she showed up to work drunk. Instead she is on her way to pass the time, because she doesn't want anyone to know about her current state of mind. By watching the houses pass by she keeps herself busy and occupied. She keeps dreaming of a life she could have and makes up stories about one certain couple; in her eyes the perfect couple. Jess and Jason is how she calls them and Rachel builds up a whole life around them without even knowing them in real life. But one day she watches something that shatters their and her own world as the happy facade begins to crumble.

OPINION

The author jumps between different points of view of three women, Rachel, Anna and Megan, and she knows how to use those views of life to keep the story exciting. Until the end it is hard to figure out who committed the crime, because the pool of suspects grows with each page. The way to get to the solution was described in a compelling way. The three narrators seem to be nothing alike, but in the end they share a great deal of traits. Rachel says about herself that she is lonely, but she seems rather lost. Anna was a homewrecker, but know her life and home is about to get wrecked. Megan has a lot more to hide than it appears at first. The reader gets sucked into the story and for me it felt as if I knew the characters. In between I got fed up and annoyed by the characters, but that happens in real life as well - people cannot always please you. Overall Paula Hawkins designed a clever thriller that was great to read.
