In Ohio hat es heftig geschneit. Der amische Familienvater Adam Lengacher macht mit seinen Kindern eine Schlittentour und entdeckt ein von der Straße abgekommenes Auto. Er findet die halberfrorene und angeschossene Gina Colorosa, sie will nicht ins Krankenhaus und so nimmt Adam sie kurzerhand mit zu sich nach Hause. Es stellt sich heraus, dass Gina eine frühere Freundin und Kollegin der Polizeichefin Kate Burgholder ist. Gina bittet Kate um Hilfe und erzählt ihr von Korruptionsvorwürfen unter den Kollegen. Doch sie hat früher schon oft nicht die ganze Wahrheit gesagt und so weiß Kate nicht, ob sie ihr trauen kann.
Bei dem mittlerweile 12. Fall um Kate Burgholder und den amischen Familien, hat das Verbrechen diesmal nicht so wie sonst mit den Amischen zu tun. Der Leser erfährt in diesem Teil viel über Kates Anfangszeit bei der Polizei und ihrer Freundschaft mit Gina. Trotzdem kommt hier die Beschreibung der Mentalität und der Lebensweise der Amischen nicht zu kurz.
Durch den bildlichen Schreibstil hatte ich die Charaktere und das Setting gut vor Augen. Die Autorin hat in ihrem Thriller das Thema Korruption, Lügen und Intrigen gewählt und erzeugt hier eine düstere Atmosphäre und lässt den Leser bis zum Schluss im Unklaren, welche Pläne Gina hatte.
Das Cover des Buches passt leider nicht zu der in der Story gewählten Jahreszeit. Ich mag die Thriller von Linda Castillo sehr gerne und werde die Reihe auf jeden Fall weiterverfolgen.
