Haven is a 2nd generation slave to a family that has some shady connections to an Italian Mafia. The treatment that she and her mother receive remind me so much of the worst thing imaginable of slavery and a cult brainwashing.
Annabelle has spent her entire summer sequestered after an incident at a end-of-school party in which she was humiliated in front of all her friends. Her best friend is no longer speaking to her, and we find out in progressive flashblack clips what exactly happened.
Insurgent started directly after where the first book left us - Will's murder, Tris parents' deaths and the destruction of Dauntless and Abnegation, with Tris, Four, Marcus and Peter, all on the run. It picks up exactly where it ended - on the train.
To say I’m slightly disappointed in The Fine Art of Truth or Dare is such an understatement. It’s truly disappointing to see this YA book fall into the ever increasing pit of boring and predictable stories where good art cover and misleading blurbs hook you only to leave you hanging.
I didn't really feel like I could identify with any of the characters. Little Bee was a bit of an anomaly, being where she's been and where she is now. I found it hard to really understand her, even though it's apparent that she's meant to bridge the gap between her world and ours and allow us to empathize for those enduring such cruelty.
Mrs. Clark is my go-to author for a good mystery book that I know I will love. This one didn't fail. The main character is likeable, and in some ways relateable to everyone. As always, it has plenty of twists and turns throughout the book to keep the suspens. Easy, relaxing read.
I was really hoping to give this book four stars... but I just couldn't. The beginning of the book was amazing. Full of humor and high school problems everyone faces. Then the middle of the book went the other direction and wasn't that exciting anymore, but I still had hope for this book... until the end. The end of the book broke my heart.
'abstraction, n.
'Love is one kind of abstraction. And then there are those nights when I sleep alone, when I curl into a pillow that isn't you, when I hear the tiptoe sounds that aren't yours.'
Creepy, nostalgic and depressing. It read like a bad acid hit. I couldn't put it down even if I didn't want anymore. I was suck in the hole and I really didn't want to be there.
I will be honest. The thing that attracted me first to this book was the different way in which it was packaged, an "accordion style binding". The whole concept was pretty clever I thought, one story told from two different people's perspectives.
"The Summoning" tells a story of Chloe, a 15-year old girl who suddenly finds herself capable of seeing ghosts. Only, of course, nobody believes her and she is quickly sent to a boarding house for disturbed kids for psychological evaluation. It turns out however, that the house and its inhabitants are not quite what they seem to be.
I Heart You, You Haunt Me by Lisa Schroeder is a quick read written in verse that packs a powerful punch with just a few words. The story is about love, loss, grief and recovery. I never thought such a complete story could be developed with so little writing.
Delaney died, for 11 minutes she was under freezing water. Miraculously, she survived but now she can sense when someone is going to die. This concept is definitely intriguing. But there is so much I didn't like about the book and very little I enjoyed. First I didn't care for any of the characters and Delaney was just so annoying and shallow.
What a moving story. This book draws you in right from the start and keeps you wanting to keep going. I felt like I was missing an old friend when I was not reading it. Although this is not the most literary of books, I responded emotionally to the story.
This book has changed me. Lisa Genova's writing style is wonderful, I feel more informed, aware, sensitive and moved by being engrossed in Alice's life and experience. I felt her emotions as she realized that soon she would be a different person. I cried when she opened a file that she had sent herself and couldn't remember doing it.
